Posted on February 4th, 2009 6 commentsHi all,
As promised, here is a sneak peak of the new home screen for the next web app upgrade. So with less rambling and more action:
Spotted a problem yet?
I haven’t exactly decided on a colour scheme yet.. So lets throw it open to you guys, and have a poll:

I would say that red is the best of the bunch but I think all of the colours are too intense. They need to be more muted to match the general look and feel of the iPhone.
Also, I hope that those icons aren’t going to slow down the loading time for the site. Optus isn’t exactly fast and responsive you know! The current version can take 30 seconds to open sometimes.

Have you thought about having a theme for each transport type like the Metlink branding is?
Orange for Bus
Green for Tram
Blue for Train -
I think it’s the other way around actually, most iPhone applications are fairly colourful, this isn’t Windows-grey after all. I understand your point though that the toolbar shouldn’t overwhelm the actual content.
The icons will be cached locally on your phone. At the moment we’re looking at a 20-30KB initial load size, and around 4-5KB each time you fire up the web app after that.

I have considered that, but the sheer number of different transport modes supported means that there will be a heap of overlap. I think for consistency it’s probably best to pick a scheme and stick with it.
We could add that as a user-configurable option though, I suppose.

Can you please make your web app use the fullscreen tag.
Just add this line:
Drives me insane without it…..

Hi Susan,
That was considered when the option was added and we deliberately decided not to do it. Given in the current version we rely on the bookmarks/add to home screen options to emulate a favourites list losing access to the bottom toolbar becomes a major problem.
So in the current iteration it’s not going to happen, sorry. The new version will probably allow for full screen, as the favourites list becomes internal.
